Behind Pot & Pebble

My name is Joanna and I’m the maker behind the pieces you see here.

I first tried pottery during my travels in Vietnam in 2017 and found it mesmerising. Upon my return home I struggled to sit still at my 9-5 job and so began attending a weekly pottery class for a year. From then, I took the plunge and bought a kiln and wheel of my own. I continued to teach myself using youtube, books and forums, and allowed my own style to evolve.

There is a beautiful harmony of art and science in ceramics. Chemistry is heavily involved in the development and refining of glazes, understanding the types of clay and the firing process. It’s humbling and fascinating to realise there is no end to the learning involved in this craft and it’s part of why I love it so much.

Each piece is made from stoneware or porcelain clay and goes through a detailed process involving multiple steps of throwing, turning, firing, glazing and firing again (to make it sound simple!) From start to finish it can take approximately 4-8 weeks for a piece to form.

When I’m not making ceramics, you may find me travelling (I tend to end up in Asia a lot for some reason), playing football and studying medicine.

I hope you see some things you like, and feel free to give me a message.

Update:

I’m currently looking for a new home with suitable space for my studio so I appreciate your patience whilst I’m not producing work. Please follow my instagram for updates as to when I begin production again!
